AMD And Vista Issues
PDF Print E-mail

Are you having a problem installing AMD’s Cool and Quiet drivers on Windows Vista? This post has instructions on how to install it easily.

AMD’s Cool and Quiet technology allows your computer to go into a low power state when it doesn’t need to be using full power to run its processor. It’s a great way to make your computer more “green”.

With Windows XP, AMD provide drivers for the installation. For Vista, there appears to be no drivers available, at least publicly.

The solution to the issue is that the drivers are built into Vista.

To find a driver:

Go to Control Panel

Click on System

Click on Power Options

Pick a plan (any plan)

Click Change Plan Settings - For instance, beneath High Performance, click the blue text.

The first page you see shows you how the computer will behave when plugged in and when on battery power.

Click Change Advanced Power Settings and a dialog box will appear.

Scroll down in the list box until you see Processor Power Management

Click the little icon next to it

Here, you can set the minimum and maximum power states for the CPU while on battery, and while plugged in. Setting ranges will allow you to save battery power and electricity need to run your processor.

With the built-in drivers in Vista, it is easy to be more energy efficient.

Vista and VPN Issues
PDF Print E-mail

If you use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) and are experiencing a problem connecting, then Microsoft’s Windows Vista may be the issue.

This problem has been known since 2007 but there are still user experiencing difficulties with their VPN after a Vista upgrade. The problem doesn’t stem from user error or a bad installation. It’s an issue with Vista and there is a patch that you need to download to fix it.

Click on this link and follow the instruction on how to fix Vista and allow you to connect to your VPN.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930163

If you are about to upgrade to Windows Vista and you currently work remotely using a VPN, you may want to talk to your systems administrator about this issue before moving forward. You could install Vista without talking to anybody and not be able to connect on purpose, but it would probably be better if you were able to work than not.

Donate Your Old Computer

After purchasing a new computer, you may seek to donate your old computer. There are a couple of options to prep your computer for donation.

Format Your Hard Drive

A simple and quick way is to format your hard drive. This is done by using the built-in “format” DOS command. In order to get to a DOS window:

1. Click the Windows Start button

2. Click 'Run'

3. In the box type the following: cmd

4. Click OK.

5. You'll see a window with a black background and white letters. You'll need to know the letter of your drive, but most likely it is 'C'.

6. To format your drive,  type: format c:

7. Hit the Enter key

Once you follow these steps your C drive will be formatted. After a reboot you'll see that you no longer have Windows installed. You can give your computer away at this point – but if you were thinking that you erased all of your information – that's not really the case...

Remove Your Data

If your computer were to fall into the wrong hands, someone could still pull your personal information from off of the hard drive. Formatting does not completely remove data, it only marks the place where your data is as 'writeable' – meaning something else can be written over it. In order to actually remove your data, you need special programs that overwrite the places where your data previously was with garbage data, then delete the garbage data – and this is repeated over and over again.

There are many utilities that will do this and a free option is “Eraser” found here: http://www.heidi.ie/eraser. A non-free utility is called Wipedrive. The directions for both of these differ and are outside the scope of this post, but either of them will enable you to forcefully erase information from your hard drive.

Important: Just remember, before you format or erase, be sure that you've saved any file that you might want to keep to an external drive and transferred it to your new computer. There's no need in causing yourself undue frustration because you didn't take the time to save your files first.

Downgrade Windows Vista To Windows XP
PDF Print E-mail

Many computer users have found that Windows Vista does not suit their needs for one reason or another and need to downgrade to Windows XP. It is certainly is possible to downgrade your machine, but it may take a few hours to do so. The first step in this process is to backup your system.

System Backup

There are several ways to offload your data. You can:

• Burn several disks if you have a CD burner

• Save the data to an external hard drive or flash drive

• Take image of the entire hard drive using a utility like Acronis TrueImage or Norton Ghost, for a complete system restoration.

Save System Drivers

The next step is to save all of your system drivers. Since your system was packaged with Windows Vista, it may not have all of the drivers it needs to run properly without the Vista operating system. If you do not backup the drivers properly, you may end up with a crippled PC. You can check which drivers are required by checking with the manufacturer’s website and by looking in your PCs Device Manager to see what drivers are installed for each component.

Validation Key

It is important to make sure that you have a valid activation key with your Windows XP Pro installation CD. You can get the activation key from Microsoft. All versions of Vista come with downgrade rights. That means you will be given an XP activation key from Microsoft or your PC manufacturer if you wish to downgrade.

Windows XP Installation

Once you’ve backed up your computer, saved your system drivers, and have your activation key, it is time to install. Insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive and power on your computer. When the first XP Setup menu appears, press Enter. Press F8 to accept the license agreement, and then select your C: drive as the desired partition and hit Enter. If you receive an error about not being able to locate the C: drive then you may be missing the appropriate drivers. If this is the case, you will need to load the drivers from a floppy drive. This is a process that may require outside expertise.  Assuming the system was able to locate the C: drive, you should be prompted with an option labeled “Format the partition using the NTFS file system (Quick).” On the final screen, press F to format the drive. Please note that this will completely erase your current hard drive. Make sure that all of your important data is backed-up elsewhere before performing this operation.

From this point you can follow the remaining prompts to install XP. The entire process will take around an hour to complete. Once the installation has finished, you can load all of your backed up drivers and data from its backup source on to the PC.

What Is A Computer Worm?
PDF Print E-mail

Another malicious program can affect your computer is known as a “worm”. A computer worm is developed and programmed to copy and distribute itself to other computers over the Internet, usually without the user knowing. Worms are different from viruses in that they often do not destroy programs or data, but that does not mean they do not cause damage. The biggest problem with computer worms is how quickly they spread. Worms can reproduce very quickly and all of that traffic on the network slows down normal usage. It can stop internet browsing or opening documents and grind all activity to an annoying halt.

Worms typically exploit bugs or security holes in Internet browsers or email clients. Some programmers who have a dislike for Microsoft will create worms that utilize security holes in its software to spread itself. Computer worms can also be spread by tricking the user into opening a malicious website or email attachment. You can protect yourself (and others) from computer worms by installing anti-virus software and making sure your system is up-to-date.
